More than wine

“more than wine” is more than just a slogan for us. These are the three words that together best describe the philosophy by which we live. It is based on the love of working with wine grapes, love of Burgenland and of our wines, which is reflected in every element of our activities – carefully and passionately implemented by the individuals working at Winery Leo HILLINGER in Jois.

Our winery manages an area of more than 100 hectares of vineyards. We are particularly proud of the conversion to organic farming, which took place back in 2010, in order to make our contribution to sustainability in viticulture. Every year we sell about 1.5 million bottles to more than 20 countries worldwide, making us one of the top wine producers from Austria. 15 grape varieties are vinified by us and processed into quality wines. At the most beautiful time of the year, in autumn during the grape harvest, we employ an additional 50 employees in order to be able to harvest our grapes gently and safely for further processing.

Lake Neusiedl is an important climate regulator for our region. The lake covers an area of about 300 square kilometers and is only 1.50 meters deep in summer. Northern Burgenland is considered the sunniest area in Austria. As soon as the temperatures start to drop in October, the fog shrouds the landscape in a milky veil. These are the perfect conditions for the noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which we need for the production of Trockenbeerenauslesen – the highest quality level for sweet wines besides ice wine. Only three regions in the world have the climatic conditions for the development of Botrytis infestation, which are necessary to produce such special wines.
